ANN SYMES - ARTIST STATEMENT
The starting point for me is in the decision to use a technique or certain materials which I approach with intuitive and playful experimentation. There are no mistakes, no wasted paper or materials because I know the exploration will lead to something meaningful. There is always a point where I sense a resonance with the work and that's when I 'take it and run with it'. While I am working on one piece it already feels as though it's flowing into the next and that's how it continues until I have a whole series completed.
These six pieces are from the series, Unfolding that Ann made in 2017/2018. Large abstract charcoal drawings formed the main body of the work. They led to collage/ mono-prints, 3D cut and folded paper structures, sculpture and painting. It seemed that she needed to go through the whole process for it to lead her to painting in a style that is completely new to her and one that she is keen to explore further.
