I am an artist printmaker based in Rye,
working in various media:
My printmaking is a traditional intaglio process which involves etching a drawing into a copper plate. Each impression is individually inked and printed onto prepared cotton rag paper, in a limited edition. Each print is an original artwork (unlike reproduction prints). I am inspired by scenes and locations around Rye, using only the drawn line to create a whole range of tones and mood. Other works recall Leonardo's notebooks and feature animals, mathematics, and classical references.
My large charcoal drawings were originally done as a liberation fromthe detailed line of work of a copper plate etching. Working the subject as an oversize, tone drawing helps compose the smaller line drawings of an etching. Exhibiting both drawings and etchings together has created an interesting dynamic of forcing the viewer to stand back to take in the charcoals, then drawing them into the detail of the of the etchings. Charcoal drawings were the subject of the solo exhibition "Animals with attitude" at the Rye Art gallery in November 2017 - an illustrated catalogue is still available.
I have had solo shows in London, Tunbridge Wells and Rye, and exhibited in group exhibitions across Kent, Sussex and London, including The Mall Galleries, Bankside Gallery, Saatchi Gallery, The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and the Affordable Art Fair. I am a member of the Society of Graphic Fine Art, and the Rye Society of Artists.
