Stormont Awards Fish Poster 2017

During November 2017 we exhibited the entries to our art competition for students at our local Primary Schools - The Stormont Awards, a new educational initiative we undertook for the first time that year.

The Award scheme is inspired by the memory of the Gallery's Founders, artists Howard and Mary Stormont, and the prizes were funded through the generosity of the Rye Art Gallery Trust, the Rye Community Shop, and ArtWrite, our local art and office supplies shop in Tower Street, Rye.  The scheme is based on an idea by Michael Miller, Trustee and a former Chair of the Trust.  He believed that we should be doing more to support our younger children in their creative visual expression.

It has been a unique opportunity for young local artists to have their talent recognised and rewarded.  We look for pupils who demonstrate good technical ability, observation and interpretation alongside strong creativity and originality.  The students undertake their art work at school under the supervision of their teachers.

The 2017 theme was FISH

The Schools participating:

Kate Van Der Pump, Trustee and former Art Teacher, was delighted to work with five of our local schools.  They were:

Beckley C of E Primary School,   Peasmarsh C of E Primary School,   Rye College,  Rye Community Primary School,   and St Michael's C of E Primary School, Playden.

Award Categories

There were 3 age categories:

KS1 - Five to seven years.  KS2 - Seven to eleven years.  KS3 - Eleven to fourteen years.

125 works accross the three age categories were submitted to Rye Art Gallery by 17th October 2017.

The 2017 entries were judged by a professional panel who were:

-  Dani Humberstone, Vice-President of the Society of Women Artists

-  Jane Fenn, Director of Rye Art Gallery

-  Louis Turpin, Artist

A prize was awarded (£50 art voucher) to the winning student and to the runner up (£25 art voucher) in each age category.  The winning schools also received  £100 towards art materials.

We were especially grateful to Kate Allinson Sims and the trustees of Rye Community Shop for sponsoring the Prizes.  Kate encouraged us to apply to the fund and supported Michael's vision for our local children.  We are also grateful to Nick Moon and colleagues at Artwrite who generously sponsored vouchers for art materials and donated a special prize.

Prize-Giving Ceremony

The prize-giving ceremony took place on 4th November in Gallery 6.  Awards were presented to the winners and their Schools by the Mayor of Rye, Councillor Jonathan Breeds whom we were delighted to welcome.

Organiser, Kate Van Der Pump writes "The Gallery was thrilled to welcome so many children and their families to the Awards Ceremony.  Watching the children, some as young as four, so excited to see their work on the Gallery walls made it clear just how important events like this are."  See below for the list of winners.
